Innate immunity in physiology and pathology

Enzo Poirier’s team studies how our cells detect and fight pathogens from the very first moments of infection. They explore ancient defense systems that humans have inherited during evolution, including surprising similarities with antiviral mechanisms found in bacteria. By uncovering how stem cells and immune cells sense danger and trigger protective responses, they aim to better understand why some people are extremely vulnerable to infections or develop autoimmune diseases. Ultimately, this research could help design new ways to modulate the immune response for therapy.
